Be careful not to confuse the Commandments of Jesus Christ with the "Ten Commandments" in the Old Testament, the Old Covenant. While studying the commandments of Jesus, it will become evident that God is not only the God of Grace but also the God of expectations.
Obeying the Commandments of Jesus brings rewards. For example, “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7), is considered one of Jesus's Commandments. Those who obey receive Eternal Life!
The Old Testament Commandments exquisitely teach what God considers to be sin, but they require perfection, and no person has ever been perfect i.e. good enough, so it can only bring condemnation.
But, Jesus, being the "Son of God" and therefore perfect, could and did live up to the commandments of the Old Testament Law, and by doing so was uniquely qualified to die in the place of all who would accept Him as their Savior.
There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Rom 8:1). Jesus paid it all!
Of the many ways that the Jesus of the New Testament revealed the good news of the kingdom of heaven, it is the profound and most important way that is so often passed over.
Jesus frequently taught in parables and also the well-known discourses like the Sermon on the Mount, through signs and wonders like the miracles, by quoting scripture and even by argument and confrontation. But what is so often missed in the four gospels and the Book of Acts, is that in order to bring us into the kingdom of heaven Jesus also gave us direct commands. Presented here are the commands that the living Jesus gave as recorded in the four gospels and the Book of Acts. Presented not randomly, but in the exact order they are presented in the gospel.
